Janis Pauluks’ (1906-1984) "Flower Vase" transforms a familiar still-life motif into a vibrant explosion of colour, rhythm, and energy. At the centre, a dark turquoise vase anchors the composition, from which abstracted blossoms and curling stems radiate outward in dynamic movement. The flowers — rendered in shades of pink, yellow, and soft violet — seem to hover between form and dissolution, their outlines dissolving into a pulsating background of golds, aquas, and deep blues.

The brushwork is loose, expressive, and fearless. Swirling lines and layered textures create a sense of turbulence and vitality, as if the bouquet were caught in a gust of wind or a moment of transformation. The traditional genre of the flower still life is reimagined here through Pauļuks’ modernist language: experimental facture, bold colour contrasts, and a refusal to confine nature within static boundaries.

A master of expressive colourism, Pauluks injects the work with both sensual beauty and restless energy. "Flower Vase" is less about flowers as objects and more about their essence — movement, fragility, and fleeting light translated into paint.
