Gothic

1996, Oil on canvas, 146x135 cm, Abstract Expressionism Read more

In this powerful composition, Herberts Silins (1926–2001) translates the soaring grandeur of Gothic architecture into his own expressive artistic language. Inspired by the monumental verticality of French and Spanish cathedrals, the artist builds a monumental vision out of layered, textured strokes. The cathedral-like forms rise dramatically against a clear blue sky, their rhythmic lines and fragmented surfaces evoking both stone and light.

The work is painted in Silins’ signature pastose manner, with thick layers of paint applied in dynamic, vertical movements. Shades of cream, ochre, deep blue, and black interplay across the surface, suggesting the interplay of weathered stone, shadow, and illumination. The result is not a literal depiction of a building, but rather an emotional abstraction of Gothic grandeur—capturing the spirit of timeless architecture as a living, almost sculptural presence on the canvas.

Silins, one of Latvia’s prominent modern painters of the 20th century, is celebrated for his landscapes, seascapes, and urban scenes. His works are held in major collections worldwide, including the Latvian National Museum of Art, Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

The artist’s signature can be found on the lower left of the painting.
